Foil underlay is a wood/laminate underlay, made up of a layer of aluminium foil laminated between or on the face of foam or other padding. It has the following benefits:
- Moisture Barrier – It is a moisture barrier, also known as moisture lock, protecting flooring from moisture that can come up from the subfloor. This is especially important with concrete subfloors, which trap moisture within themselves until pressure is exerted on them. This makes it particularly useful for wood or laminate flooring, as both benefit from moisture protection.
- Thermal Insulation – The foil reflects heat back into the room, and prevents cold coming up from the subfloor, which helps keep the home warm and lowers your energy costs.
Insulating underfloor heating (UFH) is crucial to ensure its efficiency and to minimise energy loss. Insulation helps direct the heat upward into the living space, rather than losing it to the ground or other parts of the building structure.
