One of the most popular types of underlay is the PU foam-type carpet underlay. It’s a popular choice for carpets for the following reasons:
- Comfort – Nothing can beat the comfortable feel of a foam underlay beneath your feet. If you want to enhance the comfort of your carpet, whether you already think it’s comfortable and want to increase the comfort, or whether you have a small pile carpet that is denser than it is thick and comfy, then a PU foam carpet underlay is the way to go.
- Insulation – The cellular structure of our recyclable foam underlay options has an inherent heat loss-reducing ability. This helps keep the room warmer, as less heat is escaping through the floor.
- Noise Reduction – Some of our PU foam underlays have a dense composition that makes them a fantastic acoustic absorber, dampening impact noise and reducing how far sound travels between rooms and floors.
- Lightweight – A PU foam underlay is a lightweight material, easy to cut, transport and handle. This makes installation a fairly easy DIY job.
- Variety Of Options – Our PU foam underlay comes in various thicknesses and densities, allowing you to choose the perfect level of cushioning and insulation for your flooring and subfloor. It’s worthwhile noting, however, that too much thickness can make the flooring feel unstable. So it is important to match your carpet to your underlay for the best performance.
- Protection – Whilst protection isn’t the main job of a PU foam carpet underlay, it will ensure that your new carpet has more support than it would otherwise whilst also giving the benefits above and helping the carpet to continue to look good for longer.
Despite PU foam underlay being the best fit for carpet underlay, several other types of flooring benefit heavily from this type of underlay.
- Laminate Flooring – PU can provide a supportive, comfortable walking surface for laminate flooring, which has a problem with feeling hard and loud due to creaking underfoot. With the underlay, the flooring becomes noticeably more stable and quiet, with the flooring absorbing much of the sound. Furthermore, some forms of PU Foam underlay have a vapour barrier, which can protect your laminate from moisture rising from the subfloor.
- Engineered Wood Flooring – Engineered wood is stable dimensionally. PU underlays provide stability and prevent movement, keeping the flooring in good shape for longer. Specialist PU underlays can be used with underfloor heating and added to that the inherent sound reduction properties of some PU underlays, and your rooms will be much quieter too.
- Artificial Grass – This may be a strange flooring option to think of, but a PU Foam Underlay has been known to be used on artificial grass. This gives fantastic shock absorption, especially useful if you have children. It also adds a more natural feel to grass as it mimics the feeling of real soil. Bear in mind, however, that PU foam is porous (putting aside vapour barriers) and you will notice that water drains through it quickly, preventing waterlogging.
A PU foam underlay is best used for rooms where its strengths are magnified and needed, such as:
- Bedrooms – Bedrooms are places where you go, primarily, to relax. Nothing destroys that feeling more than an uncomfortable and/or cold floor. This makes it a great place to put down a highly comfortable and sound-absorbing underlay, to ensure the overall purpose of the bedroom is that much easier to fulfil.
- Living Rooms – A living room is another place you go to relax, however, it’s also a place where many guests or family will visit. Enhancing the comfort of your living room makes it a more inviting and enjoyable space, which is especially important as guests will likely have their shoes off. Furthermore, noise distractions in other rooms are minimised through acoustic insulation.
- Home Offices – Remote work has changed the way many people live. A dedicated office space within a home is not quite as rare anymore, and for those who need one, a PU foam underlay is perfect. It will not only ensure that you can work in higher degrees of comfort, but depending on the choice of underlay, you could be warmer and less bothered by sound.
- Children’s Rooms And Playrooms – The soft cushioning of a polyurethane foam underlay will give you peace of mind. Children of all ages will have a safer environment to play in, not to mention a warmer one.
